Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Addiction, Getting to the Root
Addiction, Getting to the Root
By Treva Susuras
As I have said in recent posts, we are in a battle. This is a spiritual battle not physical. Let me make this a little more personal, the devil hates you, his job is to destroy you. He will take what has happened in your past and remind you of it every day. He will make you feel guilty, dirty, and disgusting. He will tell you what ever it was that happened to you was your fault, you brought it on yourself. Even if you were a child being abused, he will tell you it was something wrong with you making that happen. Devil is a liar and a father of lies. He will also tell you that everyone hates you, they are all out to get you, you were and are a victim. Never had a chance. Jesus was not there for you , He didn’t care or He would not have let this happen.
Let me tell you this, Jesus is alive and well. He knows you, He loves you and He wants to set you free. I have not got an explanation for some of the things that happen in your life or mine, but one thing I know for sure is that we don’t have to live in that pain of our past, or even our present. Jesus wants to set us free.
So many times we think God won’t help us and we turn to drugs, alcohol, anger, perfection, cutting, bulimia... Let me tell you for sure there is a way out. Jesus died so we could be free, but we don‘t believe that. We torment and torture ourselves. We tend to go around in a circle and never stop to get off the merry go round of despair.
Now this blog is about the roots of addiction or other life issues. Think of it this way. If you plant a plant, you have to water it, feed it, give it lots of sun light. Love can help it grow also. Addiction is the same way. What we feed our addiction will make it grow or kill it. In this particular instance we want it to die, yet we feed it, pamper it, water it, keep it in the dark so no one will know about it. We believe we have a great excuse for having it. We even have family members agreeing that we can’t help it and make excuses for us.
At times we feel like that is the only way we can deal with our past or present life. The roots grow deeper and deeper, stronger and stronger, and we get farther and farther away from freedom. All of a sudden the roots are growing around our legs and arms. Our hands are tied from the strength of the roots of addiction or life issues. We find ourselves lost and alone drowning in despair. The roots have finally gotten to our mind. Yep, our mind, that is where the battlefield is. It is what we believe that is true to us. It may not be the truth but its what we believe so we make it true to ourselves.
You may be asking how do I get those roots to die and get set free? Well I am going to tell you. We start with the truth, remember the truth will set you free verse?
1.We start by digging up the roots, past pains and see them for what they really were. Then we give them to Jesus so he can heal that memory.
2.We look up truth in the word. Jesus loves and accepts us no matter who we are and what we have done or do. He does not look at our sin He looks at our heart. Now that being said, we still need to learn how Jesus would have us live and try our best to be pleasing to Him. He is watching to see if we try.
3.We reach out to others that can help us and minister to us. Someone in addiction will not be able to tell you how to come out of it as they have not come out of it themselves.
4.We must be able to admit we are in a life controlling situation, such as I am suffering with addiction, anger, depression, mental illness… we won’t be able to receive help if we don’t believe we have a problem.
5.To sum it all up as best I can, we need to feed and water our freedom, ( word of God) we need to give it lots of Son light, (Jesus) Set your mind on the things of above not on earthly things Colossians 3:2
6. If we make sure that our root is growing from the power of Jesus Christ we will be free. Find someone that can help guide you in the right direction, jump in and enjoy freedom. I did and there is nothing like living a life for Jesus, that is true freedom.
